THE ALIENS’ DARK SECRET

“YOU MAY BE THE ONLY LIGHT THEY EVER SEE”

Breaking blue moonlight spilled through the clouds streaming fast across the October night sky. Deep booming began in the distance from beyond the ridged mountain top ahead. It was low with a strange, constantly changing rhythm. Cade waited for the dark gray mists ro begin rising up the slopes. He glanced around at the still pockets of slim, short Carres Evergreens glowing neon green in the silent night. When the mists began to rise he got his three stones ready. He quickly threw them up the slope one after another, skipping them along the upper stones. Dark spirits slowly emerged against the spilling blue moonlight from behind each pocket of Carres Evergreens. Cade slowly broke a smile.

It’s time for the next mystery challenge. We join Cade Mayson as he explores in the mountains west of Cashes Dade at night. He’s been seeing bizarre flashing lights and hearing mysterious sounds coming from somewhere out here. He believes there is some kind of secret alien activity going on. They told students like him not to explore in these mountains, but that’s not going to stop Cade. In fact, if you want Cade to do anything, just tell him he can’t. About a year ago, the aliens attacked Cashes Dade murdering 20,000 people out of the 60,000 people who lived there. They gave no warning and not much explanation. The aliens claimed the people had to be killed because they were dangerous, working with dark spirits to create deadly illnesses. Cade believes they’re working on something to try and finish them off. He believes they are evil because of the unfair way they run their schools, punishing students who can’t succeed in the exact way the aliens believe is right, and because they murdered 20,000 people with no proof that they were dangerous. Cade wants to learn their secrets to figure out what they’re really doing here and how they can be defeated.

The mystery challenge will be figuring out which alien tower reveals a clue about how they can be defeated. The key will be to look for what is smart, what makes sense. Leave a comment below if you think you know the answer. It will be revealed in the next Character Fun Facts Feature. Can you figure it out? Once Cade gets an idea what the aliens are doing and where, he’ll get his best friend Blake to join him in spying on the alien activity. It will take some convincing, Blake will probably say he’s not going, it’s too risky, even though he can be just as crazy as Cade, sometimes even more. Cade will just smile and nod. Blake will shake his head defiantly. Then Blake will just find himself going with Cade to check out what the aliens are doing out here in the dark. But first, Cade has to make his way up the mountain.

Cade took a look at the dark spirits gathered at the clusters of Carres Evergreens on the left and on the right up the slope. Dark gray mist rose up in thick clouds across the upper slope. “Now you see me, now you don’t,” he said quietly as he scrambled up the slope in the heavy mists. He jumped from stone to stone up the long slope to the top. Chilling winds rushed across the high rocky slope. Dark gray mists faded away. Cade dropped down within the stones. He gazed up as he heard music playing in the far distance. A lady was singing a sad, drifting song but with a mysterious hope playing within. Fiddles and drums played the slow, drifting melody behind her singing. A neon green light flashed slowly around from behind the mountain top. Cade stared with a curious, intrigued expression, his eyes raised and almost slanted at the same time. He looked around to see slim shadows roaming the slope on his right and to his left. He took out another set of stones and threw them far to his left, skipping across the larger stones. He smiled. Dark spirits to his right quickly drifted in his direction. He quickly dropped down between the large stones. A loud groaning sound dragged behind the mountain. A sour horn blared out. The dark spirits glided past. Cade slowly looked up to see them all flying across the slope on his left. He smiled brightly, then waving goodbye he said, “See you later. Good luck trying to find me.”

Cade flew up the final slope, his feet barely touching the rocks as he made his way to the top. Blue lights flashed rhythmically from a half stadium shaped tower far in the distance beyond the mountains. Cade stared out across the rolling hills below where dark mists hung like a flowing sheet over the grounds. The mysterious distant song grew faster with the whining fiddles playing a bright, energetic song. The lady’s voice sounded like a drifting, haunting spirit but singing a bright dream. Several red towers appeared briefly moving across the hills in the far right corner. Whistles played out a short distance behind him. Cade looked around and hurried over to a cluster of stones. He kicked a few small stones down slope as he scrambled up to his hiding spot. He put his fingers to his lips and motioned for the stones to be quiet.

He watched the flowing darkness below where he began to hear some kind of whining sounds at a fast-paced rhythm. An alien voice rang out in a drifting, haunting, but hollow sound, echoing across the wide valley. Cade watched with a bizarre, half-curious, half-concerned expression. Then a massive, slim tower in neon green shimmering light appeared among the hills. Dark, slim figures appeared near the bottom, moving around in rapid, sharp movements. As the lady continued singing a brilliant neon green light appeared at the top of the slim tower and began slowly roaming across the distant mountains to the left, slowly sweeping back and forth.

Dark spirits appeared at the top of the mountain. “What took you so long?” Cade asked quietly. Cade scrambled out. Then he hit his blue shell lighting it up in blue shine. He pointed it at himself and said in a loud voice, “Looking for me?” The spirits turned in his direction. He sprinted along the top. Then Cade faked left as he put the light out before diving to the right. He scrambled fast along the top until he disappeared over the edge. He glanced back. The dark spirits glided off to the other edge. Cade smiled and hurried down the slope, clapping and nodding rhythmically.

Tomorrow night Cade will return with Blake to spy on the alien activity. This is where the first story in the new mystery series begins called:

DARKCORNER LAND FEATURE: THE MYSTERIOUS ALIENS

“YOU MAY BE THE ONLY LIGHT THEY EVER SEE”

Have you ever wondered if aliens exist? Have you ever imagined what it would be like if aliens invaded our world and took power over every country? What would you do? How would you respond? How would you try to defeat them to take your country back? Would you raise your hand and tell them “We come in peace?” Leave a comment below and tell us what you would do. Cade, Blake, and Drew were told that the aliens had supreme knowledge and knew the best ways to run school. Drew would call it mumblebrush, pretty sure that’s not a word, but oh well, Cade would call it garbage, and Blake would call it a word I can’t repeat here.

The next mystery challenge will take you to Cashes Dade where Cade and Blake are exploring in the mountains finding new alien structures going up. The mystery challenge will be figuring out which alien tower reveals a clue about how they can be defeated. This post will offer some clues for this mystery challenge as well. Can you figure it out?

The kingdoms of DarkCorner Land had seen some mysterious things and had been haunted by dark spirits, but they still were shocked by the sudden alien invasion. Cade and Blake had outrun dark spirits in several close encounters before. They had seen some strange visions in the sky, but they weren’t prepared for how their lives would change, and not for the better. Their schools are now incredibly strict and don’t allow for creative ideas. Cade, Blake, and Drew have plenty of them, but the aliens don’t want to hear them. In this mystery series you can actually join in the fight. You can help them solve the mystery of how to defeat the aliens. Check out the page:

THE DADESTAR REVOLUTION

On this page you can check out the Canndaze Prophecy that reveals the secret of the aliens. It’s written in code so the aliens don’t figure it out but the people do. Do you have any jokes that you and your friends tell that no one else would understand? Or maybe you wouldn’t want other people to hear it, like your parents or teachers. There is a secret in the words of the prophecy. Every post reveals more clues as the story of the DadeStar Revolution led by Cade Mayson continues. Can you solve the mystery?

Why are they here? They want power over the kingdoms, but they could have destroyed them completely if they wanted and taken everything, but they haven’t. What exactly do they want?

The aliens have taken power over all the kingdoms of DarkCorner Land. They built a city called Arapreshday with massive white towers so bright you can’t look directly at them. They declared to the kingdoms that they are now the rulers over all of their kingdoms. The alien messengers told the people that their new ruler was an alien named Madrastra. No one has ever seen him. The aliens now make the laws that every kingdom must follow. Ever since they arrived they haven’t stopped building new towers and structures all throughout the land, around the kingdoms and out in the country. The aliens warn students, especially BlackStar ranked students, not to explore too far in the mountains. Guess which students didn’t listen to them?

Cade Mayson and Blake Candade are two 12 year olds who have a strong determination to discover new ideas and new places. They have been exploring in the mountains far from Cashes Dade looking for new alien structures and alien activities. Dark spirits are roaming the lower slopes. Bizarre distant lights are flashing to crazy musical rhythms. They can hear loud groaning sounds with bright lights flashing around to a booming rhythm. Look for the connection, that will be the key. They are about to discover way more than they expected. Check out the next mystery challenge. Cade and Blake are about to see something incredibly mysterious.

CHARACTER FUN FACTS: GHOST STRIKER DREW MARSHER

“YOU MAY BE THE ONLY LIGHT THEY EVER SEE”

Cade and Blake are going on a daring mission to sneak into their school tonight to steal the prophecy held by the alien leaders. Shadows are moving everywhere. Every window and door seems to be creaking in the chilling October winds. They’re watching for dark spirits roaming the halls and for the aliens who stand guard at the alien tower on top of their school. The school office is locked, but Cade has a plan. They know to stay in the shadows, and they know how to get creative in outrunning dark spirits. But what they don’t realize is that someone else is hiding in the school.

Drew Marsher is a 12 year old from Cashes Dade who will never forget the night the aliens attacked the kingdom. 20,000 people were murdered in the attack. The aliens claim those people were dangerous, working with dark spirits to create dark illnesses to destroy the people so they could take power over all the kingdoms. What Drew saw that night says otherwise.

Before we continue with Drew, it’s time to reveal the answer for the last mystery challenge. The key question that reveals an important clue about how to defeat the aliens is this:

Why haven’t they destroyed everyone?

Did you get it right? What does it mean? Leave a comment below and tell us if you think you know the answer.

Drew wasn’t surprised when the aliens arrived, in fact, he was expecting them. Drew has read just about every book there is about space, the planets, and alien life. He watches the sky every night for alien activity. Before the invasion he thought he saw bizarre lights appear far above the clouds. Sometimes blazing lights would streak across the sky. Now he watches the alien towers where ships fly off. Sometimes they fly straight up into the sky and disappear. He has seen strange flashes and heard heavy booms coming from high above the clouds. Drew believes there is a great war happening between many planets and that earth is at the center of the war. He’s expecting to see other alien races appear soon. The question will be, who’s side should they join?

Last night, Drew saw a bizarre flash in the sky over the mountains. It kind of mushroomed and slowly expanded out in a slow green wave before disappearing. Then he saw several ships fly low over the mountains with bright light beams shooting out, roaming the hills. He believes they were looking for something or someone. That’s why tonight he’s going to sneak into the school. He’s done it before, to sneak into the school library to read books the aliens won’t allow BlackStar Students like him to read. This time, he plans on sneaking into the office to recover the prophecy he knows the aliens are hiding in there. He believes the prophecy must reveal clues about what’s going to happen soon in the great war of the worlds and the aliens don’t want the people of Cashes Dade to figure out how to win the war. When Drew finds his way to the office he’ll be in for a surprise.

Drew Marsher is really smart, but he struggles in school. He struggles to sit still and focus. He can be hyper-active and impulsive in his thinking and actions. He needs to be active and move around to really learn well. He hates trying to learn and study in silence sitting completely still for long hours at a time, but this is the only way the aliens allow students to succeed. If they can’t follow this way, they lose points, and Drew just doesn’t get much good studying done during these times because he needs action and noise. Drew is smart and creative. He is also good at finding solutions for problems.

Drew basically says whatever happens to be on his mind at the time. He can go on pretty long talks changing topics rapidly. When he starts talking, you never know where it’s going to go. You can bet it will probably have something to do with outer space and aliens. Drew is a wanderer. If you ask Drew to go to the lunch line and bring you a drink, he might be back in a few minutes or a few hours because he saw something interesting on the ceiling or wandered to who knows where. As annoying as his wandering can be, it is also really valuable. Drew sees things no one else sees. He discovers great ideas that no one else thinks of.

Last night, Drew could see something bizarre was going on in the mountains west of Cashes Dade, and he was right. He didn’t know, but he was looking where Cade and Blake were out spying on the secret alien activities. Something mysterious happened to Cade and Blake out there, something they will have to be forever concerned about. The aliens really were looking for someone. They were looking for Cade. Something happened that Cade and Blake can only pray the aliens never find out. But they were looking. The question is, what do the aliens know?

THE MYSTERIOUS SHOW IN THE SKY

“YOU MAY BE THE ONLY LIGHT THEY EVER SEE”

“Who are they?
What planet do they come from?
What kind of empire do they have?
Why are they here?
What do they want from us?”
Get ready for another great mystery challenge. Cade Mayson and his friends face an overwhelming challenge-a system that is incredibly unfair, run by a superior force. The aliens seem impossible to defeat, but are they? Are there any clues that reveal how they might be defeated? There just might be. The mystery challenge for this post is that there is one question about the aliens that is key to beginning to figure out how to defeat them. This question leads to a key clue. The previous post:
DARKCORNER LAND FEATURE: ALIENS IN THE SCHOOLS
offers some clues for what the answer is. Pay close attention to this post and the story that will begin soon about the time Cade and Blake saw a mysterious vision in the sky over the mountains west of Cashes Dade before the aliens arrived. The answer will be revealed in the next Character Fun Facts feature. Leave a comment below if you have a guess. Can you figure it out? Can you help Cade in the fight?

Several years ago the kingdoms of DarkCorner Land were invaded by aliens who used their great advances in technology and weaponry to quickly take power over the kingdoms. They watch everything closely-every business must be run the way they want and they get a pretty large share of the profits, but they seem much more concerned about the schools. That’s why two aliens run every school-in other words the principal and assistant principal in every school is an alien. Every classroom is overseen by an alien who sits in the back. Every student knows the eerie feeling of being watched by an alien all too well, especially when they’re dancing.

THE MYSTERIOUS SHOW IN THE SKY

Moonlight fell across the rough mountain slope like curtains rolling across. Blake slowed down approaching the large dark stones ahead.
“Cade, we might have to go around.”
“Never, I’ll die first,” he said. Holding out an invisible sword he dramatically pretended to stab himself before falling back dramatically. Blake shook his head then looked up the stones intensely.
“They’re pretty smooth,” he said pointing to the the two stacks of steep, smooth stones lined up close together leading up to a wide, flat top. “I don’t see a way over.” Cade stepped up, took one look, then turned to Blake and slowly broke a smile. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Cade shrugged, then wedged himself between the two stone towers and worked his way up between them. Blake just sighed and shook his head. “You’re crazy, Cade.”
“So you’re going around?” Cade asked from the top.
“No way.” Blake then worked his way up to Cade. They gazed out at the final slope to the long, flat mountain top. A slow moving wave of dark clouds approached from the far left. “That’s bizarre.”
“Look at all the dark spirits milling around at the top.”
“They’re all looking at the sky past the top.”
“We need to get there.”
“I don’t know…”
“Let’s go.” Cade took off up the slope.
“Don’t we need a plan?” Blake asked running after him.
“We’ll just blend in.”
“Because we look like dark spirits?”
“Not yet.”
“Not yet?”
“You’ll see.”

“This should be good,” Blake muttered under his breath as they drew near to the top. A massive dark shadow slowly stretched over them. The dark wave slowly rolled across the sky past them. Cade stopped just short of the top reaching into his backpack. Blake watched perplexed while he fumbled around for what seemed like hours until finally he pulled out two large black sheets. Blake raised his eyes. “This is your plan?”
“Yeah. We wrap these sheets around us. We’ll look just like them.”
“You can’t be serious.”
“It’ll work. Besides, we’ll hang in the back. If any of them recognizes us we’ll turn and run.” Blake sighed several times as they wrapped the black sheets around themselves, then slowly crept up to the crowd of dark spirits just standing still watching the sky. The kids stared out at the smooth dark sky over the rolling mountains on the other side. The soft winds died down completely. They waited and watched in dead silence. Blake looked over at Cade who stared ahead with a solemn, empty expression with wide eyes.
“What’s wrong with you?” he whispered.
“Nothing.”
“Why are you staring like that?”
“I’m just trying to look like one of them.”
“But you’re scaring me.”
“We’re standing a few feet behind a crowd of ghosts but you’re scared of me?”
“Actually yeah.”

“Wow.” Just then a small distant light appeared far above the clouds. Slowly the neon green light grew larger and clearer in the shape of a narrow triangle. Then a green light flashed out in slow circle across the sky as a visual of a stadium appeared with a crowd of people sitting still in the stadium. Cade and Blake exchanged highly intrigued looks before turning back to see a bright golden light beam shoot out down to the stadium. Then it slowly roamed around the stadium like a ticking clock across the dark citizens. It dragged around several times before stopping where a small group of citizens in a dark corner were dancing. The light grew brighter and held there for several long moments before in a sudden flash the entire sky went dark.

DARKCORNER LAND FEATURE: ALIENS IN THE SCHOOLS

“YOU MAY BE THE ONLY LIGHT THEY EVER SEE”

What would you do if your school was run by aliens? How would you like being watched in school all day by aliens? That’s what Cade, Blake, and Drew have to deal with in their school. When the aliens invaded, they took power over their kingdoms and their schools. Every school has an alien in charge, usually wearing a white suit made of crystals. The aliens are somewhat taller than average humans. They have faces that look somewhat human but with lines up and down. Their faces are stretched, looking old but strong at the same time. Their skin is a sky-blue colour. Every school often has another alien of high position who works with the leader. Then there is an alien assigned to each classroom. They sit in the back watching the students and the teacher as well.

The aliens established in the school what they call their ONE WAY to succeed. This is for students and teachers. The aliens believe the only subjects that are truly important are English which includes reading and writing skills, math, and science. The subjects of history, some types of math and science, art, music, or anything else is not considered important. Even if you excel in those subjects it won’t help your ranking that much. Cade doesn’t really believe in reading, not that he thinks it doesn’t exist, but that it’s impossible to read more than ten pages before falling asleep.

The aliens established a ranking system for students which continues into adulthood as well.

BlackStar: This is the lowest ranking meaning failure.

BlueStar: This is the next highest ranking meaning average, just okay.

GoldStar: This ranking means you’re succeeding good, but not great.

WhiteStar: This is the highest ranking, meaning you are elite.

These rankings are really important for the students. If you are ranked as BlackStar, you will start getting punished. At first, you just get more schoolwork and tests, but if you still don’t move up then you start to have to either come in before school or after school to do chores. Most of them are cleaning the school, some are just other boring tasks that need to be done. If you continue to fail long enough, then you get tough jobs assigned to you working long hours with hardly any breaks and no pay. Cade and Blake are ranked as BlackStar. They, like many of their friends, face having to get these punishments soon. Do you get in trouble at school? Does it happen a lot? What do you have to do? What do you think is worse, having to come in before school or stay after school? Leave a comment below telling your experiences. Don’t worry, DadeStar Mysteries will not report anything you say to your school! WhiteStar Students get high rewards like various gifts, money, and high positions that have a lot of prestige.

The aliens only allow students to learn by listening to the teacher explain the subject and then write down notes. They are not allowed to draw any pictures or figure it out any other way. Every assignment is reading and answering questions. They are not allowed to do any creative projects that show them how the concept works. Tests are only a long set of questions where they have to write short essay answers. The students and teachers are not allowed to be creative, they must follow the aliens’ guides for how to learn the concepts. The aliens are also really strict with behavior. You have to sit completely still during really long lessons. If they see you moving at all you will lose grade points that will lower your ranking. How would you do in this system? Cade and Blake have had some adventures as well as problems in this system.

Cade struggles to learn in this style because for him to learn something he really has to just do it. Blake is similar, but for him he needs visuals and projects to understand how a concept works. They both struggle with sitting still since they like to be active. Both kids are smart, but they don’t learn well in the aliens’ system. They can figure things out by drawing pictures and learning by doing. Cade has a way of figuring things out as it happens. I’m not sure how he does it, like figuring out how to break through a trap set by the dark spirits to catch him, but it works. Blake knows the best strategies by looking at real examples and visuals, then he can figure things out even when he’s on the run.

They usually get through the worst lessons by playing a soccer game made of paper. They draw a soccer field and make paper goals and a paper soccer ball. Is this allowed by the aliens? Certainly not, so they have to get creative, which also isn’t technically allowed. The two kids put up books on the front end of the desk so it looks like they’re taking notes from the teacher’s perspective. But the alien is sitting in the back, so for him or her, they try to do most of their “kicking” directly in front of them, but they also have a fake set of notes written with their pens on hand just in case the alien takes a closer look. It works well most of the time, but one time they had a close call.

When any students step out of line or the teacher doesn’t seem to be teaching or managing the class effectively, the alien will communicate his message to a messenger, usually a WhiteStar Student. No one knows their language or how this works, but somehow they are able to communicate their message to the student who then states what the alien wants them to know. Their voice sounds kind of eerie and solemn when they are relaying an alien message.

So one time Cade and Blake were playing. It was a high scoring game, one of their best in fact, during an incredibly boring lesson about grammar. It wasn’t the teacher’s fault. She was a great teacher who used to teach really creative lessons that got the kids learning and moving, but she couldn’t do that kind of lesson anymore. She still secretly works with the BlackStar and BlueStar students helping them figure out how to do the best they can in the assignments teaching them creative techniques she can’t teach in front of the aliens. But yeah, this lesson was just awful. It had already been two hours. The kids were making some genius moves, but one move got away from them, actually the ball got away. Blake flicked it high, so high, Cade had to jump to block it, but it still went over his “goal.” Blake celebrated, until he saw how far the “soccer ball” went…five desks away. Cade had to act fast.

A sideways glance showed him the alien had stood up and was moving toward the paper soccer ball on the floor. He grabbed his pen, held it in his fist, and dove between the rows, sliding fast before crawling fast between the desks, rolling over several times before grabbing the ball. With his back to the fast approaching alien he quickly unwrapped it and wrote something he heard the teacher say in the lesson: “Exclamation points should be used sparingly.” The alien picked it up, staring at it with his crescent moon-shaped eyes that burned white. Cade shot a nervous glance back at Blake who was smoothly putting their fake notes down over the soccer field and putting the two soccer goals away. The alien looked it over, then handed it back to Cade. Cade watched nervously as the alien looked over at their desk before walking back to the back of the classroom. When Cade sat down he shot Blake a half-smile, half-relieved expression. Blake just put his head down with a long sigh.

Cade and Blake have a lot more to worry about now than just the strict way the aliens run their school. The aliens have created a dark illness that seems to threaten students like Cade and Blake the most. The weapon fueling this fatal illness seems to be set on a massive statue of a teenage singer floating high in mid-air at the new alien school of Daylustar. Now it’s time to hear from Cade Mayson himself. For the first time ever, hear him report on the night the aliens attacked Cashes Dade.

“Blake and I were playing soccer in his room the night the sky fell. We were trying crazy trick shots on his mini soccer goal in his room. He hit one that rolled along the bed before spinning back through the goal. I was like, ‘That’s cool, that’s cool.’ I didn’t want him to get too confident. So I…what was that? I just saw a distant flash out of my window. Hold on. Hold on. It’s just dark now. Never mind that. Anyway so I walked over to the corner trying to look really confident. I knelt down and stared with my intense stare I use when I’m trying to figure out what to do. I stared for a really long time. I have great concentration…

What was that? I definitely saw something. The alien lights are always flashing over our city. Sometimes they make bizarre pictures in the sky. Never mind that. I figured out what to do. I kicked it off the wall, off the corner bookshelves, off the window, then into the goal. It worked! It really did. Seriously, it worked. I wish that was all that happened that night. But I remember our crazy soccer game for a much worse reason than the crazy shots we made.

I’ll never forget the sound. I heard this sharp buzzing around me. I tried to figure out where it was coming from. I’d turn and it would fade away. Then it would come back. It got louder and louder. We looked outside. The sky turned smooth green looking like rolling waves. Then I saw the ships. They were lit up in bright green rhythmic flashing lights. I’ll never forget seeing ten of them appear from all sides on the outer edge of Dayces Cameron. For a long time they just hovered low over the city. Blake and I just watched, staring, waiting to see what they would do.

Dark mist started falling like sheets over the city. Green lightning flashed rhythmically across the sky. We thought it was just another storm, until I noticed the ships were still there, just hovering still in the sky. Then we started hearing what sounded like heavy cannon shots in the sky. We thought it was thunder. It wasn’t. Bright lights, brighter than anything we ever saw, shot down from the ships on the city blowing up the towers. At one point several ships dropped these golden lights down, it was like a bright rain falling over the city but it lit up the towers in a bright flash.

The people Blake and I stay with rushed in and told us we had to leave right away. We hurried down the steps with a lot of other people who lived in our tower. I’ve never seen so many confused looks. But a few knew. They knew what was happening. We were led out of the city. Several towers crashed in exploding lights really close to us. We hurried into the mountains. I saw them pretty clear in the flashing lights. I recognized a mountain I had climbed before. I told them all to follow me.

Some people went up the long, smooth slope, but I like to go up the steep, rocky slope because you get there faster. I jumped from rock to rock flying up the mountain side with the lights flashing in the background. At one point I jumped halfway up a large stone hitting a slight foothold then I instantly launched myself from there just to the top of the rock. I pulled myself up, rolled over then jumped up another cluster to the top. I turned around and just shrugged. I couldn’t hold back a smile. I really did. Ask Blake. He just shook his head.

I still didn’t completely understand what was happening. I reached the top well before anyone else did. Blake was the closest since he climbed the way I did. I saw half of Dayces Cameron destroyed, burning, dark. The alien ships were gone. The alien towers were glowing bright gold lighting up half of the sky. I’d never seen them like that before.

Like I said, I still didn’t know what exactly had happened. I knew the aliens were evil. I know my parents are on a secret mission to figure out how to defeat them by spying on the inside. I know they’re sending me clues to start the revolution against them. I knew they ruined our school and they’ve been hiding something. I knew they were hiding a dark secret, and I knew they were afraid of students like me who are creative, who think differently, who find their own ways to succeed. I also knew one of their deep secrets, something they’re trying to hide from us, because it could lead to their defeat.

I know they’re creating a dark illness fueled by the crystal crown on top of the massive statue in Daylustar. That’s why I’m going to Marcaydas secretly so I can destroy it to stop the dark illness from killing all the students like me. I don’t know how I can possibly reach it, but I’ll figure it out. I know I will start a revolution against them to take back our school and our kingdom. But I didn’t know exactly what happened that night, until I saw people crying…”

CAMDACE PROPHECY

It will begin with our students haunted by bright dreams for each
The key secret for defeating the enemy from the skies is in reach
The dark illness almost has them when they’re hurt by the light
When their eyes light up green in heavy dark, they’re in the fight
Our students move down the school steps in a procession of dread
If they make the wrong move in their dark dream, they will be dead
There’s a secret power driving them to desire the talents of any
They have a desperate wish to be on stage: praised by many
You must figure out how to reach and touch the statue and crown
This crown must be destroyed to heal the illness taking them down
The keys to destroying it are bright, helpful, yet intense in the night
You must be determined, go higher and higher, over and over to light

There’s one path they can’t see every corner when it goes bright
It’ll be the only path that has candles in the windows at night
There’s one way, one path, one hall, that can get to the concert side
This music and determination together is the key to the door to hide
In the Concert Hall the Student will become still
The Intense Rebel must fight through the chill
He must shine, lighting up the dark corner glow
If he fails to see the light, he’ll die in the show

DARKCORNER LAND FEATURE: THE DARK KINGDOM

Three strong forces from converge on the country under shadow

They’ll be amazed by the one hiding a dark secret they don’t know

The school that stood so long will come down in a crash

A small group of citizens sing close to the candle-lit window

The students are blinded by the alien lights in the show

Angry shouting is heard from the dark stadium in the night

From the south the stadium is lit by a distant glowing light

They are building something spectacular and mysterious

They play on their dreams of becoming stars, shining glorious

The citizens walk in the darkness where glittering Ilumin can’t go

Students stumble down the steps in the murky dream-like shadow

Follow the long, narrow flickering shadows of the dark orange glow

Get ready to enter the Kingdom of Marcaydas. A great battle will take place here, where the aliens will finally be challenged by the Cashes Dade Ghost Strikers. Marcaydas is a kingdom known for mining. The kingdom is surrounded by relatively tall, rolling mountains made of black stone covered in various evergreens. Many people work deep in the mines and are really good at finding new minerals that can become powerful medicines. People call it the dark kingdom because they tend to get stronger and more frequent storms than most other kingdoms so there’s often days that look like night. It’s also called the dark kingdom because so many people are miners working in heavy darkness that requires a special kind of lantern light because few lights can light up that kind of darkness.

The city of Marcaydas is called the City of Caras Dayermore. This city is spread out in winding narrow roads throughout hills. The streets are narrow dirt paths with packed dead leaves on the ground. The complexes are not that tall, but they’re wide with slanting roofs at odd angles. They’re made of black stones with windows made of dark blue stained glass. The streets usually are lit by poles with greenish-gold lanterns, except in the lower dark corner of the city where strong chilling winds constantly blow through putting out those types of lights. The only lights that can be used there are lights used in the deep mines. The entire city looks like a dark, twisted maze with gloomy dark golden lights glowing in the windows.

Marcaydas can also be called the dark kingdom because many people believe it’s haunted by dark spirits, more than perhaps any other kingdom in DarkCorner Land. Citizens often report seeing dead faces just staring out the windows. Sometimes it’s a blank face which is perhaps even more creepy. Some people like to explore the city, especially at night, just to see if they can find any of the types of ghosts reported. Sometimes they’ll go in an abandoned home and see how long they can stay through the night. Would you do that? More importantly, why are there so many dark spirits in Marcaydas?

Mysterious things are happening in Marcaydas right now. The aliens have been building a lot of mysterious towers with bizarre lights and displays shooting across the sky. Now they have just built an elaborate new school called Daylustar. At the center is a grand concert hall with a massive dome. At night the dome is always lit up in flashing colours of green and blue, flashing to heavy, mysterious pounding music that’s heard throughout Caras Dayermore. Even more mysterious is the massive statue they built that also floats in mid-air with a bright golden crown on his head. But students are struggling with a new, deadly dark illness.

Cade and Blake believe the aliens have a sinister plan with this new music school. They are planning on going on an adventure to Marcaydas. It will be interesting to see two bright, energetic kids like Cade and Blake in such a gloomy, dark country. They believe the prophecy is predicting that the aliens will develop a new, powerful weapon to take down many students, especially students like them who are ranked BlackStar. They believe the weapon the prophecy is describing the crystal crown. The aliens are calling all students to enter the school to try and become music stars. Cade and Blake have decided to answer the call, except they have a secret mission to destroy this new weapon of the aliens. Being ranked BlackStar means failure. Cade and Blake have failed in their school, but they have skills the aliens just don’t see. In fact, that’s exactly what these kids are counting on…

CHARACTER FUN FACTS: CADE’S RIGHT HAND MAN

RANDOM FUN FACTS ABOUT CADE’S PARTNER IN CRIME: BLAKE CANDADE:

Blake is usually a good kid to talk to, except right before a soccer game. He gets really, really intense and fired up. He has a routine: he sits quietly with eyes closed, feet tapping rapidly. Then he tries to visualize him making great plays and leading his team to win. He always struggles to visualize however and gets really mad if you try to distract him, even though he can’t visualize that well when he has quiet. After the failed visualizing, he gets up and does this shadow boxing thing for a good ten minutes to get fired up. I wouldn’t suggest talking to him at this point because he will get really upset.

Blake is also not someone you want to talk to after the game. If they lose, you will hear a long speech about the twenty things he and the team should have done differently, and you don’t want to disagree, and for goodness sake’s don’t say anything good about the other team. If his team wins, it’s even worse. You will get a recap of the ENTIRE game with highlights of his best plays as he will demonstrate.

Blake is a diehard fan of the Cashes Dade soccer team. He thinks about every country first and foremost in terms of soccer. If you mention any country he will tell you what happened in the last soccer game against them. If they’re a rival of Cashes Dade you will get a complete history of their series. At random times Blake will be reminded of some great play Cashes Dade made or some tragic loss. You have to be careful not to do or say anything that reminds him of soccer.

Blake can and will turn anything into a competition. He will race you to a table that’s only ten feet away. He’ll count how many steps he can jump over and challenge you to get as many as he does. He will go for the most ridiculous jumps. He’ll ask you, “Do you think I could make that jump?” He’s not really asking what you think. He wants you to say, “No way.” Then you’ll see this crazy intense look come across his face before he does some insane jump. Then he’ll turn back with arms out wide and ask if you think you can do it.

Blake has a really interesting method for studying for a test. He takes about a half-hour deciding where he will study. He takes another hour talking about how he has to study for the test while basically stalling because he doesn’t want to get started. Next, he finally decides he better get started by hanging his head with a long, dramatic sigh. Thirty minutes later he sits down to study, with a drink, a snack, and a book about soccer. He studies by re-writing his notes and drawing pictures. He doesn’t really understand anything until he sees how it works in writing or in a picture. Then he can understand any subject as well as anyone. He studies hard for fifteen minutes, then gets up and kicks around a mini soccer ball in his room trying to score against a mini soccer goal. Then he goes back to studying for fifteen minutes. It works pretty well for him as long as he doesn’t wait too long to get started before the test.

Blake is always on the move, even when he sleeps, if he sleeps at all, which is a widely held myth among the students at Cashes Dade School. Blake is constantly running, or half-running until he has to sit down. He likes to stand a lot and walk around in school which helps him concentrate better. Teachers would let him do that for that reason until the aliens took over. They enforced a rule that you have to sit completely still. He still taps his feet and shifts in his chair while sitting through long lessons.

Blake is also a great tag player. He’s not as legendary as Cade, but he’s still really tough to catch. He’s a fast runner and can fly past you just when you think you’re about to get him. He also is really good at tagging people when he’s it. He’ll come up with a play in his mind, then chase you into a trap. You think you’re getting away from him, but he’s leading you to an exact point where in a sudden rush he will catch up to you. If all you have to do is tag him, you might be able to catch him. But trying to actually capture him when he’s running at you, is pretty much impossible, because he runs with a mysterious power, something the dark spirits will soon discover…

CHAPTER FIVE:

Alien horns blared out with a sour powerful ringing through the dark mountain valley. Chilling winds swept down through the mountain pass. The triangular shaped Candles Evergreens danced in the passing winds sweeping down all seven rows. Ghostly shapes of white, gold, green, blue, purple, and orange danced in a fast rhythm to the eerie whistling song echoing out between the two towering ridges. Cade and Blake stared hard through the blurry, flickering candle lights. The various colours flickered to the rhythm of the deep booming organ song playing from the top in the distance. Bright alien lights shot out from the ridge where several tall shadowy figures stood. Cade and Blake were lit up directly in the light.

“Now what?” asked Blake.

Cade turned to him and slowly breaking a smile he said, “I guess it’s show time.” Cade scrambled down, followed by Blake. Cade shot down the slope under the blazing orange lights. The bright alien lights followed them hurrying down the slope. Blake pointed to dark spirits gathering at the bottom. Cade swerved sharp right along the slope. “Any ideas?”

“You’re asking me?”

“No, I’m asking the ghosts.” Colours of orange shifted to dancing blurry purple lights.

“We should play tag with them.”

“I was joking. What’s your idea?” asked Cade.

“That’s my idea, let them see what it’s like playing tag with you.”

“Cool, let the games begin.” Cade turned left, angling down slope toward the approaching ghosts.

“I never thought I’d feel sorry for dark spirits.” The ghosts drew close in the bright green lights tracking the kids. Cade slid to a stop. Then he shot straight up the slope. He faked right, then left, then shot up to the right. The kids rushed back through dancing orange lights. More dark spirits appeared ahead. Cade ran straight up toward them. Blake followed close watching with anxious eyes as they got closer and closer. Dark spirits glided down into the alien lights.

Cade turned sharp left. Blake glanced back. Dark spirits rushed up toward them. “They’re on us, Cade.”

“It’s cool.”

Blake just sighed. “I need new friends.”

“I heard that,” Cade answered as he stopped, pivoted, then turned right. Blake sprinted after him before suddenly a shadow flashed past him the other way. It was Cade. Blake sighed again and sprinted after him cutting past the dark spirits on both sides. Blurred purple lights danced around them. Cade started angling down through the dreamy blue lights dancing to the eerie pounding piano music. Blake glanced back at the advancing dark spirits.

“We have a problem Cade.”

“Kind of why we’re running like this.” Heavy red light surrounded them.

“I mean, we can lose the dark spirits, but not the alien lights.” Chilling winds rushed harder down the slope as Cade suddenly turned left. Dark spirits entered the bright shine. Cade slid to a stop, then turned up right, faked left, then shot up further right up the slope. They hurried up through the still red light around them. “We have another problem. When we play tag the other kids get tired of trying to chase you.”

“So?”

“Dark spirits don’t get tired.” They angled up into dancing green lights blending with the bright alien light beams. More dark spirits poured in up the slope.

“They’ll get tired inside.” Blake just rolled his eyes. “I saw that too.” Cade sprinted sharper left toward the dark spirits. “Maybe I’m the one who needs new friends.” Cade powered faster directly toward them.

“There’s more coming up behind,” said Blake glancing back.

“Be ready.” Cade got closer and closer to the ghosts lit up in the alien lights. Then he slid to a stop. The dark spirits closed in on all sides. He turned back to Blake, winked, then shot up like a cannon in the opposite direction. Blake followed close behind through the blue lights dancing to the pounding organ music. Alien lights felt hot on them. Cade angled to the right into the red haze.

The kids looked around at the flashing shadows around. Blake gazed around at the cool red light. “Cade, Cade, hold up.”

“We’re getting ahead. This is our chance.”

“I know, that’s why I think we should stop here.” Cade shot him a doubtful look. “I followed your crazy plan and it worked. Now you can follow mine.”

“And?” asked Cade.

“And what?”

“And what are your plans for the Summer?”

“What?”

“YOUR PLAN FOR GETTING PAST THEM! I WAS BEING SARCASTIC. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN?” Alien lights roamed back and forth where they stood.

“See that? They’re looking for us now. They can’t see us. Look.” Blake pointed ahead where dark spirits rushed through the blue swaying lights. “I noticed these evergreens stay still. The red lights make everything look still. I don’t think they can see us moving in here.”

“Only one way to find out,” said Cade flashing him a smile. He crept to the edge of the red candle glaze and took out his blue shell. Then he stepped out into the green candle-lit forest row and flashed the light down slope. He slipped back into the red-lit row of still evergreens. Dark spirits flew down the slope following the alien lights. Cade turned to Blake. With eyes lit he said, “Let’s go.”

The two kids flew up the slope through the hazy red glow. Darkness fell over them as they jogged up the rocky slope curving up to the distant mountain top. Breaking moonlight flickered through the dark blue clouds racing across the sky a short distance over them. Eerie organ chords played at a bizarre rhythm striking the slope and the upper ridges harder and harder. Blake glanced back. The colourful candle lights danced and swayed in their rows among the ghostly green shapes under soft moonlight. An hour later, the two kids slowed down as they drew near to the top.

A tall, slender blue glowing alien tower stood on the far left with another one on the far right. The bizarre music boomed out back and forth between the two towers. Sharp green lights filling up massive grand windows appeared in the towers as they drew closer.

“See any aliens?” asked Blake.

“Stay in the shadows. They could be watching.” Organ music grew stronger and louder around them. The kids bumped fists as they reached the top.

“We made it,” said Blake.

“I guess this mountain isn’t too hard for BlackStar Students now is it?” Cade said with a smile.

“Those stupid aliens are probably still looking for us down there.” A bright blue light appeared just ahead on the flat summit with short dark green grass. The light looked like a massive fire burning in slow motion. Four fountains with bright shooting waters stood at each corner of the fire. Cade and Blake hurried over to the left fountain and got down low. They peered over the edge and saw a mysterious sight near the blue light. Cade and Blake exchanged confused looks before turning back. Near the blue light was a large model of the City of Carolmire.

“Why did they build that?” asked Blake.

“They’re studying it. That’s what they’re really doing here. They’re not here to make sure they don’t escape. They’re up here to study the people in Carolmire.”

“Why?” Sour organ chords played heavier in a broken rhythm on all sides.

“Because the aliens are missing something.” Turning to Blake with bright intensity, Cade continued, “They’re working on something secret in the mountains west of Cashes Dade. I haven’t figured out how to break through to see what they’re working on, until now.”

“You’re talking about the mysterious flashing lights?”

“Yeah. The aliens are missing something.” Breaking a smile, Cade added, “and I know what it is.”
